Bij het late avond zappen kwam ik afgelopen week langs een documentaire rondom een recente expositie van de Britse kunstenaar David Hockney. De documentaire “a bigger picture” volgt de kunstenaar gedurende 3 jaar. In deze tijd keert hij vanuit Californië waar hij de afgelopen decennia heeft gewoond terug naar zijn geboorte grond in Yorkshire met als doel zichzelf als kunstenaar opnieuw uit te vinden. De kunstenaar raakt tijdens zijn verblijf gefascineerd door het landschap en de wisseling van seizoenen in zijn geboortestreek en begint deze doormiddel van het aan elkaar koppelen van doeken in steeds grotere schilderijen in de buitenlucht te documenteren. Uiteindelijk word de periode afgesloten met een in 3 weken tijd vervaardigd olieverf schilderij ‘Bigger Trees near Water’. Met een uit losse canvassen opgebouwd formaat van 15 bij 4 meter het grootste in de buitenlucht vervaardigde olieverf schilderij ooit gemaakt. David Hockney bewijst met zijn werk dat landschap schilderen alles behalve dood is.

During a late night tv zapping session I stumbled by a documentary on the British artist David Hockney. The documentary ‘A bigger picture’ follows the artist over a period of 3 years in which he creates a large series of paintings of the Yorkshire landscape. He paints outside but practicality doesnt stop him working bigger and bigger eventually leading to the creation of the largest ever outside made oilpainting “bigger Trees near Water’. A inspiring film that shows the still exciting potential of landscape painting. He’s also quite a funny old man so that makes it worthwhile to watch in itself =).
